We believe that many health problems are caused, or made worse, by
un-healthful accumulations within the body. These accumulations may be in the form of
chemical toxins such as PCB's, Dioxin, pesticide residue, etc. or normal metabolic products that are present in abnormal amounts.
Which is why fasting is so important.
Modern Excess
In the past, many health problems were associated with deficiencies. Today, a majority of health problems are associated with nutritional excess. Conditions
including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, digestive problems,
constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, allergies, chronic fatigue, arthritis,
and some forms of cancer are associated with nutritional excess in general, and
excesses of animal fat and protein in particular.
By adopting a health promoting diet and lifestyle, many people are able to
overcome both acute and chronic illness. If the resolution of a health concern
is too slow, or an individual is having difficulty making the necessary diet and
lifestyle changes, fasting can often be extremely useful. A properly
conducted fast can allow the body to rapidly mobilise and eliminate
toxic and metabolic accumulations.
Fasting
Fasting is defined as the complete abstinence from all substances except pure
water in an environment of complete rest. Rest must be emphasised as even
moderate activity can significantly increase protein metabolism, altering
optimum adaptation to the fasting state. To maximise the benefits of
fasting, unnecessary mobilisation of nutrient reserves must be avoided.
Fasting should always be conducted in an appropriate environment.
It is important to be able to differentiate a normal, although
sometimes unpleasant, healing response of the body from a physiological compromise.
Fasting helps the body heal itself. Fasting is a powerful and
effective tool in a comprehensive program designed to promote the restoration
and maintenance of optimum health. Fasting can help people get on (or back on)
track to healthful living.
How Long to Fast
The body's response to the fast itself is an important diagnostic tool in
determining optimum fasting duration. The idea is to fast as briefly as possible, but as
long as necessary, to allow the body to heal itself.
Three phases of fasting have been identified. The first phase lasts
approximately the first six hours after the last meal. The body absorbs glucose,
amino acids, and fat from the intestinal tract. Phase two lasts around two days
while the body uses its glycogen (sugar) reserves. Phase three begins as the body
switches from glucose to fat metabolism, allowing for the conservation of vital
protein reserves.
Ending the fast
Too rapid a return to food and activity can create problems. It is during the
re-feeding program that good dietary and lifestyle habits are reinforced.
A fast helps people make the transition to healthful living.
Fasting in acute disease
Fasting can be extremely effective in resolving acute disease symptoms such as
fever, inflammation, swelling, pain, etc. The most clear-cut indication for
therapeutic fasting is the lack of appetite that characterises acute disease. It
is in acute disease that we often see dramatic results from short term fasting.
Fasting in chronic disease
Fasting is also effectively utilised in chronic disease. Many conditions of long
standing may respond to therapeutic fasting. Unlike acute disease symptoms that
often respond quickly, chronic diseases may require from several days to several
weeks of fasting. In some cases, multiple fasts may be necessary.
Fasting also can be used as a diagnostic tool in uncovering subclinical
pathology that may exist. Addictions to drugs such as alcohol, cocaine,
nicotine, and caffeine are examples where fasting can dramatically reduce the
often protracted withdrawal symptoms. Fasting is a method of speeding up the
detoxification process. It can be an intense and sometimes unpleasant
experience, but it is highly effective.
People who undertake a fast tend to achieve health more quickly than
those who attempt changes without the benefit of a fast. Fasting makes dietary
and lifestyle transitions easier. There is no better way to stop a vicious
cycle. Fasting also provides an excellent opportunity to do the introspection
that is often lacking in modern life. Fasting helps the body to compensate for
the consequences of excess consumption that often lead to disease and
disability.
Fasting is not a cure. It is a process that facilitates the body's healing
mechanisms. It is a gift to an overburdened body. It is extremely effective in
creating an internal environment where the body can do what it does best--heal
itself.
If you tried it once, you know why so many people do it.
